Founded in 1771 and three years later moved to its present location on the  south bank of the Tar River, Greenville was originally known as Martinsborough. In 1786 the name was changed to Greenesville in honor of Nathaniel Greene, a Revolutionary War hero, and later shortened to Greenville.
During the early years of Greenville, the Tar River was a navigable waterway where several established riverboat lines transported passengers and goods. The leading agricultureal crop of cotton which allowed Greenville to become a major cotton export center. However, before the turn of the century tobacco surpassed cotton and became the leading money crop. Greenville became one of the State’s leading tobacco marketing and warehouse centers.

For nearly a century, Greenville was recognized for being an important tobacco market and the home of a small State-supported college known as East Carolina Teachers College and later East Carolina College. By the mid 1960’s, a new image began to evolve when the small college had become the third largest State-supported college with enrollment approaching 8,000 students. By 1967, East Carolina College became East Carolina University. The ECU Medical School admitted its first four-year class in 1977 and by the year 2000, enrollment at ECU had grown to the 18,000 mark with current enrollment of nearly 26,000 students. ECU has also just recently been granted a state-supported Dental School which will be only the second such school in North Carolina.
Greenville Economy
Greenville’s current economic development began in 1968 when Burroughs Wellcome, a major pharmaceutical research and manufacturing firm, chose Greenville as its home. The site is now owned by DSM Pharmaceuticals, which employs approximately 1,400 people. The City and Pitt County have also become home to many other major industries and businesses including Rubbermaid, NACCO Materials Handling Group, Grady-White Boats, Overton's, and ASMO. Greenville's has long been one of North Carolina's fastest growing cities and in 2008 was the 10th largest city in the state. The city has become one of North Carolina's most important economic and educational centers with population exceeding 72,000 covering over 30 square miles.
